Missing wheel nut key Empty Missing wheel nut key

Post  cejsmith 15/8/2011, 7:11 pm

This morning I found to my surprise that I'm missing the wheel nut key for my new TF, this also may explain why on examination one wheel ( that has the new ZZ3 on)only has 3 nuts!!!

Whats the best way of getting them off????

Find an old socket that almost fits and whack it on with a big hammer. Then, being careful not to round off the nut completely, undo it with a wrench. Once off, throw all the standard MGR locking wheelnuts away (because they are total b****cks anyway) and get a nice set of new aftermarket ones like McGard.

Oh, any you'll probably need a new socket too... Cool

A gator grip will do some of the MG locking nut, if you have one it's worth a try.

If you have the 2 pin type locking nuts then a 19mm twist on removal socket will take them off, just ask Rich how easy it works as I had to remove his on smudge, if you need I have locking wheel nut removal sockets.

If its a Mcgard then the only way to get these off without marking the wheels is by a locking wheel nut tool specially for Mcgard etc where you impart a colar into the pattern which allows you to then remove the nut(s) or see someone who has a master key set of mcgard, I have half the master set Smile

There are some people(mobile machanic's) that can come you you to remove locking nuts if you don't have a key but you need to prove its your vehicle or take it to a garage that can do it for you, simple Smile

Are the nuts stuck in standards sockets, or rounded nut removal sockets?

Standard sockets, it doesn't really matter , I wont be trying to hard it will only cost a few quid to replace them.

Put the sockets into a vice and give them a good tap with a hammer and punch/screw driver
