Oh no!!! I don't believe it!
Ok well just sent stew a pic and spoke to him on the phone. We've not confirmed it yet, will have to wait for the garages opinion tomorrow morning but it looks like i may have HGF and caught it very very early indeed
I haven't got coolant loss
and oil is fine - no creamy texture there
all temperatures have been fine.
However, my coolant has looked suspicious for a bit as you know, but i thought it was just old it has been in there nearly 6 yeas. However tonight when cleaning boot out i poped the cap off the expansion tank to notice oily film little more than its ever been then noticed the creamy foam on back wall of the expansion tanks. So i fear the worse and it's looking very likely.
All i can say is thanks to Stew for calling me back quick and i am glad i think i have caught it early as its only a small amount of oil at the min

Re: Oh no!!! I don't believe it!
Exactly the same happened to our F just before we did the Switzerland trip earlier this year. Oily film in the expansion tank. Took it into Clifton Lane Motors and they confirmed HGF.
Very nice feeling to catch such a certain catastrophy early.

Re: Oh no!!! I don't believe it!
i hear that changeing the coolant frequently (like on a 2 year base) can help prevent this? it true?

Re: Oh no!!! I don't believe it!
I don't think it makes much of a difference providing it's a decent mix. Obviously, it gets changed when carrying out a proper service, but if you're using OAT and topping up with the same, you shouldn't really have any problems. I definitely wouldn't make it a prerequisit to religiously change it every two years... unless of course you're piling up the miles. In which case, your servicing intervals would probably be that or more frequent!

Re: Oh no!!! I don't believe it!
Sorry to hear about this Paul, gutted for you.
On the bright side 70% of the work required for the big service needs to be done for HGF repair, so at least you didnt find out afterwards and have to get it done again. At least you can get the Landrover gasket fitted and then hopefully all your worries will be over.

Thats exactly it Nick! So gld i had a check before it went for cambelts and tensioer and pump to be done.
Well diagnostic is it is very very early stages......
wasnt happy at the quote thought, so prop not going to be done there, plus he wants to skim the head wasnt happy at that...

Re: Oh no!!! I don't believe it!
Yep, definitely take it elsewhere. You won't know whether it needs a headskim until the head is off, and even then it's highly unlikely you'll need one when you've caught it so early. So unless the mechanic is phychic, avoid at all costs!Dark Knight wrote:wasnt happy at the quote thought, so prop not going to be done there, plus he wants to skim the head wasnt happy at that...

my thoughts exactly Rich, i mean come on, its a tiny amount of oil in water, no over heating no fried head and he wanted to Skim it........ ok i would understand if had been taken off and he proved to me it wasnt flat and it had been faulty from new but telling me it needs doing without inspection.......
anyway going to a guy round the corner tomorrow, the guy who did Stew's engine swop he said he will have a look and quote me
also he was quoting me for 12 hours labour, i know thats the book time but i heard it take less than that!!!

Really sory Paul but the cost should be swallowed up in the big services (duplicated work etc). My son got his HG changed including skimming for £400
I guess your quote was in excess of £800?

Well a cam belt, tensioner and distributor belt change is £300 to £350 including parts. A good price eg ebay for a mobile mechanic to do the HG without skimming is £350. If you add the water pump and additional servicing items and time them £800 plus VAT isn't too far away.
If this is the garage that wouldn't rev Wiggles above 4500 when cold I would use them at £800 as I would rather have it done properly first time. The guy I bought the Trophy from had his HGF repaired at a Peugeot dealer and I have only just now got to the bottom of the intermittent overheating.......the coolant temp sensor had a wire snipped off right up against the connector, the thermostat housing was leaking. With the new thermostat housing fitted the top radiator hose began to leak too!
A pity the garage was in Wales or I would have been back to him demanding a refund!!
£800 for a good repair and piece of mind/confidence in the car is a good price in my opinion.
Cheers
Dave

Re: Oh no!!! I don't believe it!
well it was 255 plus VAT (so 300 total) so for the 2 cam belts water pump tensioer and system refill
and the price including HG was 950 (incl VAT)
So 650 to do the HG element only, when you break it down like that it does seem alot since half the work stripping back was done in the first 300, if this makes sense
anyway its the skimming issue i have a problem with too

HGF
I had mine done at manor garage about 2 years ago and cant fault the work he did. Sent mine away to witney for skimming but hgf had actualy gone at only 18000 miles Good luck whatever you decide. One thing when its done you won't have to keep worrying about it.
