Re: New car
Haven't heard any news but one can only guess that if a 4 door car is required for a couple then it means there is a new additional on the way congrats if so
Anyway, ZT 190 saloons can be picked up dirt cheap now due to the cost of running one and the fact that the saloon isn't as saught after as a tourer. I have seen then up for sale from as little as £600 with full mot and tax, with the average cost of £900. Finding the right one will be awkward as you need one that hasn't had a hard life and comes with service history to prove that the belts and water pump has been changed within the last year or 2, that way is one less cost you need to plan as soon.
Usualy things to check for is work undergone such as brake pipes and rear springs as these are the common faults, electrics(windows, door motors, and dash board) then you have your standard wear and tear such as brakes(disc's, pads, shoes, sensors) and drivers seat. If everything is in working order and feels good on what you are looking at then thats a very good start

Re: New car
To add to Matt's comprehensive list, make sure the VIS system is working properly. Also check the cooling fan comes on with the air conditioning, it's a multispeed fan and the resistor that controls the low speed can burn out and isn't available separately. Both parts are expensive to replace if needed.
On the plus side, the ZT190 is a dream to drive and very comfortable on a long run.

I have had both engines, I would always choose the V6 now, more torque, less lag, and the noise .
MPG between them is not that far off, 28 for 1.8 and 23 for V6. Its just things that has been mentioned, VIS motors and inlet manifold the first thing to check. I wouldn't buy one that has not had the belts done, thats 600 more job.
The note of the Fan though, if its a face lifts or late Mk1s, you can replace just the resister, which is about 20 notes, which is what I did with mine, so maybe look for a Mk2 one??

Re: New car
23mpg from the V6! how do you drive? I'm not normally known for hanging about and get 27-28mpg or 30+ on a long run.

Hehe, lots of short sprints between roundabouts, plus the noise of the v6, means you are forced to put the foot down just a little bit

Re: New car
Hi Trev,
Do you want to buy a nice ZS Hatchback instead? Much cheaper to run and much easier for loading and unloading pushchairs, cots and stuff

Re: New car
Noticed in this week's Chron that there's a red ZT 190+ at a garage in Irthlingborough. They had it up at £2995 but have now got it reduced to £1995. I'm assuming it's a pretty good car and I'm sure more could be saved with a bit of haggling! Worth having a little walk up the road for maybe...
