Run the car from work to home the other nght and engine was runnig for 25 min when i got home oil was just about at 80 degreesand engine fans came on. The flow of coolant to the rad had only just started Rad inlet pipe was just getting warm.

should it take so long for thermostat to open? and should the Radiator fans come on so soon

The temperature for the guage is read from a different point to the sensor that operates the radiator fan and engine bay fan. Therefore, it can be reading quite conservatively when other areas are getting warmer. I wouldn't worry too much about it at this time. However, if your guage goes up a little higher than normal and neither of the fans are on, that'll need to be checked out.

These MGs can behave in a very funny manner in the cold weather... Laughing

Thanks rich that helps a lot. When running on a long journey gauges are normal. Suppose I should be glad the fans work.
