Brake light staying on
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sodding brake light is stuck on - kept getting flashed on the motorway yesterday, and then happened again this mornig - so I pulled over and the guy who flashed me pulled in and told me!
I have to drive to Cheltenham and back tonight straight after work, then up to Staffordshire tomorrow at the crack of dawn.
Is there an easy temporary fix that can be carried out in the carpark at work at lunch time? Am not happy about driving round with it stuck on!!

Re: Brake light staying on
It's most likely a problem with the brake pedal switch. It's a fairly common problem with all cars.
Put the ignition on and get someone to fiddle with your brake pedal, if the light flickers, you should be able to see if it's the switch.
As for quick fixes, no idea. Sorry

I know its a common problem - and that my car has had probs with it before. Brake pedal has been held up with a rubber band as long as I've had the car, so may try replacing it with a newer rubber band at lunchtime and see if that does the trick!!

Do you not think that replacing the switch would be better?

SorrI didn't see your thread sooner. The ultimate fix for this problem is described here http://www.apttony.co.uk/Servicing/BrakeSwitch.html
Maybe your personal mechanic could do something if you print off the detail but probably not before the weekend.
Cheers

Re: Brake light staying on
I had this happen on mine, it is a really simple fix I used the info Dave D linked in the post above.
You have to be a bit of a contortionist but you dont need any tools. Basically lie with your back on the base of the seat, and get your head in the footwell looking up. remove the switch by rotating it 180 degrees pull out the plunger and refit - spend the next day moaning about your bad back...

Re: Brake light staying on
Ally, I hope you managed to sort the problem with the good advice given above...
BTW, I changed the title of the thread as I thought it would be useful in the future for reference, with it being a common fault in earlier cars. Kept your cry for help in your post though!

Re: Brake light staying on
Mr Griffiths has just left the building - having told me off for my clever rubber band fix, he then came out on his white horse and fixed it for me!
Very smart he was looking too!

Re: Brake light staying on
Ally - this happened to me last year, after 4 brake light switches later i took it to the guys at Clifton Lane where they fitted a metal spring to hold the brake pedal up! Works wonders!!! and saved me replacing the bushed on the whole pedal mechanism which costs a fortune.

I'll bear that in mind if Stews fix fails!! Not that it will - of course!!

Re: Brake light staying on
Ally, you have a permanent fix there, unless you make the mistake which most people make which causes the problem in the first place. Just don't catch the brake pedal with your foot and lift it upwards! That's what changes the switch plunger position!

Better not take to wearing lesbian shoes then - if I stick to stilettos I should be fine!
