cant undo the upper ball joint nut

I need to get to the upper ball joint dust cover and replace it ( it failed the mot on it) and I'm trying to undo the 19mm nut that holds it in place. It started to undo but now it's just spinning.



What should I do???

Is there not a slot in the top of the ball joint thread which accepts an allen key to counter hold it?

Failing that, use a jack to jack up the lower suspension arm so it simulates the car's weight on the ball joint, that will stop it spinning in the manner you describe.

Cut it off? My solution to everything, grinder or hammer

Thanks now it's stop raining I will try to sort it. If though I cant just replace the dust cover what size socket do I need to remover the ball joint???

We it's all sort now and the TF is now re moted, in the end when I cleaned the dust cover it was fine and the MOT testers agreed so I didn't need to replace the ball joint in the end. So if anybody needs one give me a shout!!!
