Re: Happy Birthday StevePem!
Not a flood but we have carbon deposit all over the house (like the aftermath of a fire - but was no fire!).
Problem is we have no idea how it happened! We have had the oil fired boiler checked out and that is apparantly OK and that is the only thing in the house that burns!
It built up over the period of really cold weather in December so only explanation I can think is that the extreme cold affected the way the way the oil was burned and the exhaust that it emmitted and that maybe the exhaust was sucked in through the boiler room window.
However it got in the house, was circulated around by the natural convection/circulation generated by the radiators so hit every room.
Anyway, carpets ruined and ripped up, curtains, furnishings and wall hangings being cleaned, walls/ceilings being cleaned with chemical sponges but will all need repainting.

Re: Happy Birthday StevePem!
That's a real mystery... and a real bummer too! I hope it all gets sorted soon with not too much more disruption. I hadnt' realised you were going through all that. Did you still manage to have a good birthday? Smile in the face of adversity and all that!

Yes, you just have to get on with life, no point in letting it get you down!

Re: Happy Birthday StevePem!
ahh sorry to hear this steve, Ed mentioned a boiler and damage, I assumed a flood. That soots a wierd problem, but once fixed at least it'll get you out of some DIY for a few years...

Steve
When I last had to deal with a claim like this ( grease fire on a gas cooker) they did all the cleaning etc, but also they replaced the electronic goods in the house. TV ,hifi, computer etc because if the carbon dust had settled inside the units though the vents it could cook and catch fire if it got to hot.
It might be worth you checking with your insurers.

Re: Happy Birthday StevePem!
The Insurance sent a renovation company Rainbow, who specialise in flood an fire damage. They seem very good and are working there way through things and have been at the house today (hence prep at the weekend) and so far have concentrated on taking away stuff for dry cleaning, cleaning furniture, blinds and other contents.
They will get around to the electrics/electronics in due course. My wife has a professional sewing m/c so there is a good chance that will be written off! As I was ill in Nov/Dec my wife gave me my Christmas present laptop early so there is a good chance that will be badly contaminated. Got guitars/amps as well but they say they can clean them.
