Strange Noise
Dear all
Driving up the A41 yesterday and the strangest noise appeared from the right hand side of the engine. Hard to explain, but its like a cracking noise . almost like crunching tin foil !. pulled over checked oil , water both fine , all gauges were acting fine , no sign of over heating . Exhaust and heat shield firmly in place > Any ideas ?

Re: Strange Noise
Hi Paul,
Does the noise increrase with revs or speed?
It might be worth checking the Ancilliary belt, these have been known to fray and flap about a bit. (This would increase in line the revs).
Another thought it could be the wire braiding around the flexi pipe centre section (down pipe) of the exhaust, this frays and ends up rattling against the exhaust system, it's a fairly common cause and is often cured temporarily by using a couple of jubilee clips to hold it all together
Always tricky to guess funny noises, if all both cambelts are due a change I'd check them as well as the tensioner.
Other thoughts are a possibly wheel bearing or the start of the low brake pads they have a little wire that scrapes the disc once they start to get low - it's usually the inner pad that wears first as well! (these would increase in line with road speed).
Mines had a noisey ancilliary belt tensioner (as it has aircon) for the last 3 years and I've just got used to it! Hopefully its something simple like the flexi section.
