I was glad to receive one of Dave's wonderful Kiwi blogs the other day. So for your enjoyment, here it is...

Twenty five MGs left Auckland for the journey down with an overnight stop at Ohakune a skiing support town beneath Mt Ruapahu and not far from 'Smash Palace' scene of the NZ film of the same name. Several thousand old and modern cars end their days here and are a source for the restoration fraternity. It rained again.

Fridays arrival consisted of registration and a welcome BBQ at the Copthorne. An 'M' type MG midget adorned the foyer and has been owned by its NZ family since new in 1929.

The Hood Aerodrome just out from Masterton was the venue for several activities during the weekend including the concours.

From 1931 Hood areodrome has been busy and has seen Harvard trainers and Kitty hawk fighters fly north to do battle in the Pacific war. Several hangers hold priceless aircraft and old cars. We wandered around admiring MGs and renewing friendships, one friend has the largest collection of VAs and SAs on his farm ( farmed since 1830) in the world. Another has a twin cam he has driven since 1967. The first MG6 to arrive in NZ was also on show too plus seven of eight NZ built factory sanctioned MG roadsters, four of them Vee eights. The factory did not produce any Vee eight roadsters due to cost factors so these are unique and rare.

We were back at Hood for a dress up dinner in the evening, a 40's and the Services theme saw many beautifully dressed woman and their pilot escorts arrive to the tunes of Vera Lynn sung by a very good look a like entertainer. 'Charlie Chaplin' with his bowler and cane added to the fun.

Three weeks ago here in NZ a hot air balloon was lost with all fourteen passengers killed when it accidently touched high tension wires, instantly ignited and fell to the ground. This MG weekend was the first flying of any hot air balloons since the tragedy. Mike, an American with forty years' experience was in charge on the morning we sleepily arose at 4.30AM to breakfast and watch at close hand four balloons fill with air and slowly rise in the crisp morning dew, then it was our turn to chase after them to be given a playing card from each as they landed and make up a winning poker hand. A first for NZ and only the third time it has ever been attempted. Great fun, excitement and a novelty. Lunch at a winery. The afternoon saw more fun with an autocross speed event. Of interest here was the participation of the world wide touring Douglas's in their much travelled MGTC. Of note also was the ex Towcester hot air balloon now flying in the Antipodes.

The final day ended with a fast grass motorkhana, fun trial and prize giving dinner. Guess who won the farthest travelled prize?

Well what a good turn out for Scimitar club almost didn't have enough space. I have John Bollands SS1 as dropped off night before as he wanted to play golf in morning, just as well wondering how I would get all gear into the show. I arrived at Ellerslie back gates to see Habershon's GTC & SE5 going in and had to give way to Terry Davis & grandson Shaun in Sabre 6 turing in too. Arrived inside to find Damon Seiferts SE5 & Allan Preistley & son Matthew in SE5A. Damon had shifted our sign in Mirco club space. Soon after Paul & Graham Ellwood arrived in SS1 Ti so they took prime spot out front.

Seemed to be a few parts changing hands and money at the rears, Damon selling some extractors to Steve and Steve selling a set Minilite replica rims to Dave Potts up from Ohaupo for his SE5. Lots of interested in the cars Allen's engine with triple carbs now finally sorted and Paul's Ti Turbo engine, as Peter Woodbury visited as daughter had triumph intheir stand very interested in all details about SS1 from graham's long term orginal ownership of a 1600. Rick Bearman visited also Tony & Muriel Allen who wonder across to see son Mike at Jensen stand with the 10 mill pound car the new CP8. My favourite was the lovely Lambo Muira think only one in NZ LHD ex USA 1st Blue one I've seen.

Colin Sweetman SS1 owner was up, flying in from Chch got himself another club shirt and a bargin to add to his 19 car collection as got a 6 times Triumph club concours winner Triumph Herald 13/60 for $7500 had $28000 spent on it!
Lots of cars especially 60th anniversary of TVR they had huge display about 30 cars, heard Bob Hone has himself a TVR Chimera 4L soft top.

Thanks for the time spent transferring these blogs Richard.

I forgot to mention that the black 1969 Marcos in the photos (with personal Marcos plate available in NZ) used to belong to Carole and I for well over twelve years. It was Volvo six cylinder engined with Stromburg carbs and during our ownership was fitted with a top gear only overdrive which transformed the touring capabilities of the car. It was a delightful drivers car but extremely hot to drive in the summer weather here.

As they say here 'it went like a cut cat'!
